IAFF Shatters
Last Year’s Record MDA Donation
$25.25 million
September
4, 2007 – The International Association of Fire Fighters remains
the largest contributor to the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA)
donating a record breaking $25.25 million in pledges at the 42nd
Annual MDA Telethon September 2-3, 2007. With this year’s total,
IAFF members have donated more than $300 million to MDA since
1954.
Broadcast from the South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa in Las
Vegas, the broadcast featured IAFF General President Harold
Schaitberger, who appeared throughout the Telethon, praising
fire fighters for their dedication and commitment to the
Fill-the-Boot drives for Jerry’s Kids, and recognizing many IAFF
locals by name for their efforts.
“Our goal is always to raise more than we have the year before,”
says IAFF General President Harold Schaitberger. “I am proud to
say that our affiliates across the United States. and Canada
have topped last year’s donation of $23.5 million by nearly $2
million. This year’s total reaffirms our partnership with MDA
and the IAFF’s commitment to finding a cure.”
Telethon host Jerry Lewis said,
“I’m deeply grateful to the fire fighters for their incredible
effort to raise money for MDA’s ongoing battle against muscular
dystrophy.
“The Telethon provides hope to
individuals and families coping with muscle diseases that
someday treatments and cures will be found,” Lewis continued.
“Through its fundraising efforts, the IAFF is helping to turn
this hope into reality.”
In just four days time, Fairfax
County, VA Local 2068 became the top fundraising IAFF affiliate
– raising $536,000 followed by Houston, TX Local 341 with
$531,000 in donations.
“The bottom line is that the IAFF
and MDA share a common goal, preserving life,” says General
President Schaitberger, who is also an MDA national vice
president. “IAFF members are dedicated to MDA not only because
the organization saves lives, but also because many IAFF members
are personally affected by neuromuscular disease.
The MDA Telethon has raised $1.46
billion since its inception in 1966 on a single television
station in New York City. This year's telecast was carried by
190 stations in the United States and Canada and worldwide on
the Internet.
MDA is a voluntary health organization working to defeat more
than 40 neuromuscular diseases through programs of worldwide
research, comprehensive services and far-reaching professional
and public health education. MDA maintains 225 clinics
nationwide for adults and children affected by neuromuscular
diseases, including clinics at Georgetown University Hospital
and the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. |

Lafayette Firefighters selected as
Louisiana department to be recognized on Telethon!!!
IAFF 14th District representative for
Louisiana by Danny Todd!!!
How often do you
get to participate in something that brings positive notoriety to
your Fire Department?
Your unselfish dedication to Jerry's
Kids has earned you the respect of your peers throughout the State
of Louisiana and now the IAFF. Lafayette's Professional Firefighters
were just notified that we have been chosen to represent Louisiana
on the Labor Day Telethon. Also, Danny Todd IAFF 14th District V.P.
selected Lafayette as representative for the 14th District. This is
the first time such an honor has been bestowed on our association
and is a direct result of years of hard work.
Despite the extreme heat, for the
last several years Lafayette Firefighters have ranked #1 in Acadiana
for contributions raised exceeding $100,000 annually. And for the
first time since our inception in 1939 we are #1 among Louisiana
Fire Departments. No small feat considering our competition. Without
the hard work and encouragement of the MDA staff led by Kelly
Allgood none of this would be possible.
“America’s
Bravest” is a title kindly bestowed on our profession, but we could
all learn something about bravery by spending a little time with
Jerry’s Kids. Everyday they knowingly face a very certain future if
not for your efforts. Bravest, I think you’ll find we’re only a
distant 2nd to these hero’s. |

Fire Fighters Raise Record $23.6 Million for MDA
September
6, 2006 - Fire fighters set another record in
contributions and pledges during the annual Muscular
Dystrophy Association’s Jerry Lewis Labor Day
Telethon, raising more than $23.5 million. IAFF
members have donated nearly $275 million to MDA
since 1954.
Held September 3-4, 2006, at the
South Coast Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, the
broadcast featured IAFF General President Harold
Schaitberger, who appeared throughout the Telethon,
along with IAFF General Secretary-Treasurer Vinnie
Bollon. Schaitberger praised fire fighters for their
dedication and commitment to fill the boot for
Jerry’s Kids, and recognized more than 100 locals
from across the IAFF.
“I am proud to tell you that fire
fighters in Florida and Texas, two of the states hit
hard by last year’s hurricanes, raised more money
than fire fighters in any other state,” said
Schaitberger. “They deserve recognition for
finishing first and second in what has become a very
spirited competition in our union.” He also
acknowledged the strong devotion of fire fighters
who served their communities through the most
difficult and challenging of circumstances when
Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma hit the Gulf
Coast last year.
Remembering the terrorist attacks on
the World Trade Center towers on September 11, 2001,
President Schaitberger said, “While the world
watched these catastrophic attacks unfold, and
witnessed in stunned silence, every fire fighter
knew instantly that this would be the most horrific
day our profession has ever known. They knew their
brothers would be up those stairwells making their
rescues and advancing their attack on the fires.
Fire fighters never flinched from doing their job,
and it’s that same commitment that they bring to
their fill-the-boot drives.”
President Schaitberger commended
fire fighters for giving their time to participate
in MDA summer camps with more than 4,000 MDA
children each year. Local members cook and raise
camper’s spirits, while inspiring fire fighters to
commit to do more for MDA.
“Some call fire fighters heroes for
this service and commitment, but fire fighters don’t
view themselves that way,” said Schaitberger. “They
are just doing their job – whether it’s fighting
fires or raising money for MDA – in honor of their
humble service to their citizens and their
extraordinary efforts for MDA.”
During the Telethon, General
President Schaitberger and Lynn Jones, owner of
Lynnco Custom Cycles, hosted a segment featuring the
Peacemaker motorcycle – built by Jones – and Jeni
Stepanek, mother of the late Mattie Stepanek. The
special Peacemaker motorcycle was created in honor
of Mattie, MDA National Goodwill Ambassador and IAFF
hero. Mattie died in June 2004 from a rare form of
Muscular Dystrophy. On behalf of America’s fire
fighters, Schaitberger remembered and saluted the
efforts of longtime MDA President and CEO Robert
Ross, who died in June. Ross nurtured MDA and helped
IAFF build the Fill-the-Boot program. Comedy legend
and MDA National Chair Jerry Lewis thanked IAFF
representatives from each of its 16 districts for
their generosity and for their dedication to raise
money for MDA. Lewis, 80, returned to star in the
Telethon despite a heart attack in June.
The Telethon’s all-star talent list
included Celine Dion and Telethon anchor Ed McMahon,
who returned for his 39th year in 2006. Telethon
co-hosts included Jann Carl of “Entertainment
Tonight,” comedian Norm Crosby, popular talk show
host Larry King, television host and comedian Tom
Bergeron, country singer Billy Gilman and "General
Hospital" star Kelly Monaco. As MDA's 41st Telethon
ended, the tote board showed an all-time high of
$61,013,855 for the organization's research programs
and services to benefit people with neuromuscular
diseases. Last year, IAFF members raised more than
$21 million during the MDA Jerry Lewis Labor Day
Telethon, which was also dedicated in part to the
relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina
along the Gulf Coast. MDA donated $1 million to
assist hurricane victims in Louisiana, Mississippi
and Alabama.
This year, the Telethon’s national
broadcast returned to Las Vegas, “the entertainment
capital of the world,” after 12 years in Hollywood,
California. The Telethon debuted on Labor Day
weekend in 1966 from the Grand Ballroom of the
Americana Hotel in New York City. The MDA national
broadcast was televised live from Las Vegas from
1973 until 1989; it aired from Hollywood in 1990,
then again from Las Vegas from 1991 to 1994. Since
1995, the broadcast has aired from Hollywood. |

IAFF Generates $21 Million for Jerry’s Kids
Telethon Raises Money for Hurricane Relief
September
9, 2005 - Firefighters raised more than $21 million during the
Muscular Dystrophy Association’s 2005 Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon
held September 4-5.
“Fire fighters have been and continue to operate
under the most extraordinary working conditions, doing their jobs as
fire fighters with little or no federal assistance,” said
Schaitberger. “Many fire fighters don’t even know the status of
their own families, but are still serving and holding their
communities together while also victims of this horrific disaster.”
“Fire fighters never consider themselves ‘heroes,’”
said Schaitberger. In fact if you ask them, they’ll tell you that
they are simply doing their job. They are truly the nation’s
all-hazards first responders. They also approach their work with MDA
with the same passion and determination they practice on the job.” |

Firefighters & Auxiliary win
GOLD!!!

Lafayette Firefighters and our Hearts of Fire Auxiliary worked
together to earn the coveted Gold Award for 2004. The Auxiliary also
earned it's own award for services which included their Gala.
MDA Executive Board elections were held and for the first time
there are 3 Lafayette firefighters serving at the same time. Casey Roger
is currently serving as President of the Board and is joined by Terry
Castille and Chad Sonnier.
Together our efforts amounted to over $110,000, which is #1 in
Acadiana. Every year we participate in the Lock Up, Boot Drives, Cooking
at Summer Camp, and serve as Camp Counselors as well as general
assistance at the Telethon. |

Dear Editor,
I would like to salute the Lafayette Firefighters
once again for coming to the rescue of 950 families that the local
chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association serves right here in
Acadiana. Each year they exhibit bravery, commitment and dedication by
standing in the streets of Lafayette collecting money for MDA that
benefits the local children and adults that are diagnosed with one of 43
neuromuscular disorders. They endure extreme heat and difficult
circumstances and I think they deserve much respect not only from
"Jerry’s Kids" but the entire public.
I have had the opportunity to work very closely with
local firefighters and they all have a desire to help their fellow man,
even when there aren’t any fires burning. It’s time once again for us to
recognize these deserving civil servants and applaud their efforts for
protecting our community from the devastating destruction of fire and
also advancing MDA’s lifesaving mission. On behalf of your neighbors
served by MDA and over a million other Americans with neuromuscular
diseases, please join me in thanking the Lafayette Firefighters!
Respectfully,
Kelly Allgood
